BA Contemporary Dance
About this course
Contemporary Dance is both an art form and a physical discipline that has developed over the past century into one of the most diverse and expressive forms of performance available. Rooted in but extending well beyond the traditions of modern dance, it encompasses a wide range of movement vocabularies, choreographic approaches, and collaborative practices, and operates across theatre stages, site-specific environments, community settings, and interdisciplinary contexts that bring dance into dialogue with other art forms and with broader social and political questions. At Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, this three-year, full-time BA (Hons) prepares you for a lifelong career in contemporary dance by developing your technical, creative, and performance skills to a professional standard. You will have the opportunity to become an individual and versatile dance artist, building both the physical capability and the artistic intelligence needed to perform, create, and collaborate in the contemporary dance world. Alongside your practical training, the programme develops contextual and critical understanding of how dance shapes and is shaped by the wider creative industries and by society, preparing you to work not only as a performer but as a thinking and reflective artist. Graduates work as dancers, choreographers, teachers, facilitators, directors, and curators, among many other roles in the dance and broader creative industries. The combination of technical skill and critical awareness that conservatoire training produces prepares graduates for the portfolio careers that characterise professional life in the performing arts. Teaching, education, community dance, and dance therapy are also well-established paths. Postgraduate study in dance, choreography, or performance practice is available for those who wish to develop specialist expertise or pursue research.
