BSc Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence
About this course
Computer science with artificial intelligence prepares you for two of the most in-demand fields in the technology industry. Computer science provides the foundational knowledge of how software systems are designed and built: algorithms, data structures, programming languages, operating systems, databases, networks and the mathematical principles that underpin computation. Artificial intelligence extends these foundations into the study of systems that can learn from data, recognise patterns, understand language, and make decisions, capabilities that are transforming industries from healthcare and finance to manufacturing and the creative sector. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time degree, which is available with a foundation year for students who benefit from additional preparation in mathematics and computing, prepares you to build the next generation of software. You will learn to programme at a professional level, to design software systems that can handle real complexity, and to apply machine learning and AI techniques to large datasets and real-world problems. The foundation year provides a structured and supportive introduction to programming, mathematics and academic study before you enter the main degree. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built into the programme, giving you significant professional experience in technology roles and ensuring that your academic learning is connected to the realities of working as a software and AI developer. You will develop strong programming, analytical and problem-solving skills alongside the specific knowledge of AI and machine learning that employers in technology companies, data-driven businesses and research organisations increasingly seek. Graduates move into software engineering, machine learning and AI development, data science, product development, systems architecture, technology consultancy, and research roles across a wide range of industries. Postgraduate study in computer science, AI or data science is a well-supported pathway for those who want to pursue advanced technical specialisation or research.
