About this course

Computer science is the study of computation, algorithms, data, and the software systems through which those ideas are given practical form. At its heart it is a discipline concerned with problem-solving: understanding what can be computed, how to compute it efficiently, and how to build reliable, secure, and usable systems that people and organisations depend on. It draws on mathematics, logic, and engineering, and its outputs underpin virtually every sector of modern life. At Sussex you will study this four-year programme, which includes a foundation year at the start. The foundation year is designed for students who have the aptitude and commitment for computer science but may not yet have the specific prior knowledge required for direct entry to the degree. It provides the mathematical, scientific and computational grounding that prepares you fully for the main three years of study that follow. Across the programme you will cover algorithms and data structures, programming, software engineering, computer architecture, databases, networks, artificial intelligence, and machine learning, building both theoretical understanding and practical capability. The programme notes that you will study in Future Technologies Labs, which include dedicated teaching spaces and project workspaces designed to support both individual and collaborative work. Computer science graduates are among the most employable in the UK across all sectors. Roles as software engineers, data scientists, systems architects, cybersecurity analysts, product managers, and technical consultants are direct applications of the degree. Technology companies, financial services, healthcare, government, media, and virtually every other industry employing graduates have ongoing demand for people with strong computing skills and the ability to think analytically. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in computer science, artificial intelligence, data science, human-computer interaction, or cybersecurity, or pursue doctoral research in areas such as machine learning or distributed systems.
