About this course

Computer science is the study of computation, algorithms, programming languages, software systems, and the theoretical foundations that underlie all of these. It is a discipline with both deep abstract dimensions, in the mathematical theory of computability and the formal analysis of algorithms, and intensely practical ones, in the building of systems that perform real functions reliably at scale. As digital technology has become the infrastructure on which virtually all modern activity depends, the demand for people with serious computer science training has grown across every sector of the economy. At the University of Plymouth, this three-year full-time programme includes an integrated foundation year that prepares students who need additional mathematical and technical grounding before entering the main degree. The foundation year builds the skills and knowledge needed to engage confidently with degree-level computer science from the outset. Across the full programme, you will study the core areas of the discipline, covering software engineering, algorithms, data structures, computer systems, and the principles of programming, alongside more specialist topics in areas such as artificial intelligence, security, and networks. A sandwich placement year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities are all built into the programme, giving you extensive professional and international experience before you graduate. The typical entry tariff of 120 points reflects the accessible character of the foundation entry route. You will develop the analytical and problem-solving capabilities that computer science demands, alongside the practical programming and systems skills that employers expect. Graduates pursue careers in software engineering, data science, cybersecurity, systems architecture, product management, technology consultancy, and a wide range of other roles across every sector. Postgraduate study in computer science, data science, or artificial intelligence is a well-established route.
