BSc Computer Games Production
About this course
Computer games production is the discipline concerned with making games happen: managing the complex, multi-team creative and technical process through which a game moves from concept to shipping product. Game producers and project managers are the people who hold a development project together, coordinating programmers, artists, designers, writers and quality assurance teams, managing schedules and budgets, solving problems and ensuring that the game reaches its audience in the form its creators intended and on terms that make commercial sense. At the University of Portsmouth, this part-time programme develops your understanding of the full games production process alongside the project management, communication, planning and leadership skills that the producer role demands. You will engage with the practical realities of game development, learning to use production methodologies, to manage risks and dependencies, to facilitate creative collaboration and to understand the different disciplines that contribute to a finished game well enough to coordinate them effectively. Portsmouth's programme has an award-winning reputation in this area, and you will benefit from teaching that reflects genuine industry knowledge and professional practice. The part-time format makes the programme accessible to students who have other commitments alongside their studies, including those already working in games, technology or creative industries who want to develop their production and management skills formally. Graduates pursue careers as games producers, project managers, production coordinators and studio managers across games companies of every size, as well as in related roles in interactive media, film and television production, app development and the broader creative technology sector. The organisational, communication and project management skills developed through the programme are also valued in technology project management more generally. Some graduates go on to postgraduate study in games production, project management or creative industries management, while others move quickly into senior production roles as their experience develops.
