BSc Computer Animation Arts
About this course
Computer animation arts is the discipline that creates the moving images at the heart of modern film, television, games and interactive media, combining artistic skill with technical expertise to produce characters, environments and visual sequences that could not be captured with a camera. It is a field where creative vision and technical capability are equally important: an animator must understand how things move, how light behaves, how stories are told visually, and how the software pipelines of the industry work, all at once. The demand for skilled animators has never been higher, driven by the growth of streaming content, games and immersive media. At the University of the West of Scotland this four-year, full-time programme develops your skills in character design, 3D modelling, rigging, animation, visual effects and rendering, building the artistic and technical foundation that professional studios expect. You will work through the stages of the production pipeline, from initial concept and storyboarding through modelling, texturing and animating to final compositing and output, gaining fluency in the industry tools and workflows used across film, games and broadcast production. The programme encourages you to develop both technical precision and a strong personal artistic voice, understanding that the most effective animators bring a genuine point of view to their work. You will build a portfolio of animated work over four years that demonstrates your range and creative ambition. Graduates find employment as 3D animators, character animators, visual effects artists, lighting and rendering specialists, technical directors, motion graphics designers and concept artists across film and television production, games studios, advertising agencies, broadcast media and digital content companies. Some also build careers in architectural visualisation, medical animation, educational media and the growing fields of virtual and augmented reality. Postgraduate study in animation, games or related areas is another path for those wishing to deepen their expertise or move into research and teaching.
