BA Comparative Literature and Culture and English
About this course
Comparative literature and culture combined with English is a degree that takes literary study beyond the boundaries of a single national tradition and opens it to the full range of human storytelling across languages, periods, and cultures. English literature provides rigorous training in the close reading, critical analysis, and argumentative writing that all literary study demands, rooted in one of the richest and most widely studied literary traditions in the world. Comparative literature and culture widens that perspective, developing the conceptual tools to compare and contrast texts from different literary systems, to read across periods and genres, and to engage with visual art, film, and other cultural forms alongside literary texts. The three-year full-time Comparative Literature and Culture and English programme at Royal Holloway, University of London gives you access to a world of literature, comparing and contrasting the English literary tradition with literatures and cultures produced in different languages, places, and historical periods from across the globe. You will combine the study of world literatures and visual arts with the critical study of English literature, developing as a culturally aware, creative, and adaptable thinker with impressive communication and presentation skills. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placement options provide professional and international experience within the degree structure. With a typical entry tariff of 120 points, the programme is accessible to a wide range of students. Graduates pursue careers in publishing, journalism, education, cultural organisations, arts administration, translation, the creative industries, and the civil service, as well as in a wide range of professional roles where sophisticated communication and analytical skills are valued. Postgraduate study in literature, cultural studies, or translation is a common continuation.
