BA Communication and Media
About this course
Communication and media studies examines how meaning is made, circulated, and received across the full range of modern media, from journalism and broadcasting to digital culture and cinema. It asks who controls the systems of communication that shape public understanding, how different media forms construct and represent the world, and what the consequences are for culture, politics, and everyday social life. The discipline combines theoretical rigour with practical media skills, preparing graduates to analyse media critically and to contribute to it professionally. At Liverpool this three-year full-time programme covers the breadth of communication and media, including news, cinema, broadcasting, and online media, while allowing you to develop a specialism as your degree progresses. You will be able to focus on political communication, screen media, digital cultures, media writing, language and public relations, depending on your interests. The combination of theoretical frameworks and practical skills development runs throughout, ensuring you graduate with both the critical understanding to analyse media and the professional capabilities to work within it. A sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement experience are all built into the programme, providing professional exposure, international study, and a portfolio of practical work alongside your academic knowledge. Liverpool's location as a city with a rich media and creative industries tradition provides additional context and opportunity. Graduates move into careers in journalism, broadcasting, public relations, communications management, social media, digital content creation, media policy, advertising, and the cultural sector. The degree also opens doors to postgraduate study in media studies, journalism, communications, or related disciplines, and many graduates go on to specialist postgraduate qualifications in areas such as broadcast journalism or digital media.
