BSc Coaching: Sport and Fitness
About this course
Coaching in sport and fitness is about far more than instructing people how to move. At its core, it is a discipline concerned with understanding human performance, behaviour, and development, and with creating the conditions in which individuals and groups can achieve their potential. Effective coaches draw on exercise science, psychology, pedagogy, and leadership to plan, observe, adapt, and communicate in ways that genuinely help people improve. At Wrexham University, you will study this three-year, full-time programme in a setting that combines academic study with practical development. You will explore the physiological foundations of sport and fitness, gaining an understanding of how the body responds and adapts to training across different intensities, durations, and contexts. Alongside this, you will study sports psychology, developing your understanding of motivation, confidence, goal-setting, and the mental demands of competitive performance. Coaching pedagogy forms another thread of the programme, examining how different coaching styles and communication strategies affect learning and development in sport. You will also consider the broader contexts in which coaching operates, including working with diverse populations, coaching ethics, and the organisational structures of sport. A typical entry tariff of 120 UCAS points reflects a programme that welcomes students with a genuine interest in sport and coaching practice. Throughout your studies, you will have opportunities to apply what you learn in real coaching environments, developing the reflective habits that distinguish a good coach from a great one. The programme encourages you to think critically about received wisdom in sport and fitness, and to base your practice on evidence rather than tradition alone. Graduates move into a wide range of roles including sports coaching at club, school, community, and elite levels, personal training, strength and conditioning, sports development, and health and fitness management. Many go on to work with local authorities, national governing bodies, and sport for development organisations. The degree also provides a foundation for postgraduate study in coaching, sports science, or physical education.
