About this course

Climate, sustainability and environmental management sits at the intersection of some of the most urgent challenges facing contemporary society. Climate change, resource depletion, biodiversity loss, pollution and the governance of global environmental commons are not simply scientific problems: they are deeply intertwined with politics, economics, social inequality and the decisions of governments, businesses and communities. A rigorous education in this area requires you to draw on natural science, social science, policy analysis and management thinking in ways that are both analytically sharp and practically oriented. At Sheffield Hallam University, this three-year full-time programme, which is available with a foundation year, is designed as an applied course that prepares you to tackle global environmental challenges with specialist knowledge and practical skills. The foundation year option is well suited to students who have the motivation and interest for the subject but benefit from additional scientific and academic preparation before degree-level study. Across the full programme you will engage with climate science, sustainability theory, environmental policy, resource management, conservation, corporate environmental responsibility, and the tools used to assess and manage environmental impact. A sandwich year placement and a work placement are built in, giving you significant professional experience in business, the public sector, research or non-governmental organisations, and ensuring that your learning is connected to the realities of environmental practice. You will develop the capacity to analyse environmental problems from multiple perspectives, to apply scientific and social scientific knowledge to real challenges, and to communicate findings and recommendations clearly to different audiences. Graduates move into environmental consultancy, sustainability management, government environmental agencies, NGOs, corporate sustainability, research, climate policy, renewable energy, and a wide range of organisations where environmental competence is increasingly central. Postgraduate study in sustainability, environmental management or related fields is a well-supported pathway.
