BA Classics (Latin) with Study in Europe
About this course
Latin is the language that carried the intellectual and literary output of the Roman world across more than a thousand years, and studying it seriously means gaining access not only to the texts of Cicero, Virgil, Livy, and Tacitus in their original form, but to the vast tradition of commentary, imitation, and reinterpretation that shaped European thought from the Renaissance through to the modern period. A classics degree centred on Latin develops advanced skills in linguistic analysis, close reading, and critical thinking that remain distinctive and highly valued well beyond the academy. At the University of Warwick, this four-year, full-time programme allows you to pursue the languages, literature, history, philosophy, and art of ancient Greece and Rome, with a particular focus on Latin, while spending your third year studying at one of Warwick's partner universities in Europe. The study in Europe component gives you not only a broadened academic perspective but direct experience of how classical culture is engaged with in a different national and educational context, and it strengthens your CV in ways that are valued by employers in international and culturally diverse environments. You will develop advanced critical analysis, careful reading, and persuasive written argument, as well as genuine linguistic competence in Latin. A typical entry tariff of 168 points reflects the rigorous and demanding nature of the programme. Graduates from classics degrees go on to careers in law, the civil service, publishing, journalism, education, arts administration, and international organisations. The combination of linguistic precision, historical breadth, and analytical depth that classics develops is widely recognised as excellent preparation for any career that depends on careful thought and clear communication. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in classical studies, ancient history, philosophy, or a professional field such as law, using their undergraduate degree as a strong and distinctive foundation.
