MEng Civil & Structural Engineering
About this course
Civil and structural engineering is the discipline responsible for designing, building and maintaining the infrastructure that society depends on: roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, foundations, tall buildings and the structural systems that allow them to stand and function safely over decades. It combines a thorough grounding in mathematics and physics with the practical and creative skills to transform engineering principles into real built environments. Structural engineering adds a specific focus on how loads are carried and distributed through beams, columns, trusses, frames and shells, which is fundamental to any major construction project. At the University of Manchester, this five-year full-time programme leads to a Master of Engineering qualification. The first year provides foundation-level preparation before you progress into the main MEng degree, giving you a thorough grounding in engineering mathematics, materials, mechanics and design principles before moving into structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, construction management and advanced design across the later years. Manchester's research strength in civil engineering and materials science enriches the teaching throughout. You will work on design projects that develop your ability to apply theory to real engineering challenges, using both analytical and computational tools. Communication, teamwork and professional judgement are developed alongside technical competence, reflecting the realities of engineering practice, where projects are always delivered by teams and communicated to clients, contractors and the public. Graduates with an MEng in civil and structural engineering are well placed for professional formation as Chartered Engineers through institutions such as the Institution of Civil Engineers or the Institution of Structural Engineers. Career pathways include structural design, infrastructure development, project and site management, geotechnical engineering, hydraulics and environmental engineering across consultancy, contracting, local and central government, and major infrastructure project delivery.
