About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline concerned with the design, construction and maintenance of the physical infrastructure that modern society depends on: roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, water treatment plants, flood defences, coastal structures, and the built environment of our towns and cities. It is one of the oldest engineering professions and one of the most varied, requiring both rigorous quantitative analysis and creative problem-solving in response to complex physical, environmental and social constraints. Civil engineers shape the world more directly and durably than almost any other profession. At Swansea University, this four-year full-time programme develops the mathematical, scientific and engineering foundations of the discipline and applies them across the range of structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, transportation and environmental challenges that civil engineers face. You will study structural mechanics, materials science, fluid mechanics, geotechnics, transport engineering and construction management, developing both technical competence and the professional judgment to apply it in real projects. Swansea's coastal location in South Wales means the surrounding environment itself provides relevant contexts for study in areas such as coastal engineering, flood management and sustainable infrastructure. The programme note references a year abroad in its title, and the four-year structure provides the depth needed to cover both core engineering science and the full breadth of civil engineering practice. Graduates of civil engineering programmes work in construction, infrastructure development, consultancy, project management, the public sector and environmental engineering. Many pursue the additional training and experience needed to achieve Chartered Engineer status with the relevant professional bodies. Others move into project finance, contracting, or roles in international infrastructure development. The demand for qualified civil engineers remains strong both in the UK and internationally, and the career opportunities available are broad and well compensated.
