BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the infrastructure that modern societies depend on: roads, bridges, railways, tunnels, water systems, flood defences, ports, airports, and the foundations and frames of large structures. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and one of the most enduringly relevant, combining structural, geotechnical, hydraulic, environmental, and materials expertise to address challenges that are simultaneously technical, economic, and societal. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year programme includes a year abroad, giving you experience of engineering practice or study in a different national context, which broadens your professional perspectives and builds international connections in a globally integrated profession. Strathclyde's engineering faculty has a strong research base and established industry links, and the programme is designed to meet the educational requirements of the professional engineering institutions that accredit civil engineering degrees. You will develop structural analysis and design skills, geotechnical understanding, hydraulics, materials science, and the project management and professional practice knowledge needed to work effectively in the sector. Civil engineering graduates are consistently in demand across construction, infrastructure, transport, water management, and consultancy. The Institution of Civil Engineers provides the professional framework within which graduates work towards Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status as their careers develop. Strathclyde's reputation in engineering and the year abroad both strengthen graduates' professional profiles. Further study in a specialist civil engineering area, or in construction or project management, is open to those who wish to deepen their expertise or accelerate their professional qualification.
