Civil engineering shapes the physical environment in which we live. Roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, water treatment plants, coastal defences, railways, and the foundations of buildings are all the work of civil engineers, who design, construct, and maintain the infrastructure that societies depend on. The discipline combines physics and mathematics with materials science, geotechnics, hydraulics, structural analysis, and project management, and it demands the ability to work at scales ranging from the behaviour of individual materials to the coordination of vast construction programmes.
