About this course

Civil engineering shapes the physical infrastructure on which modern life depends: roads and bridges, water treatment plants and drainage systems, coastal defences, tunnels, dams, railways, and the buildings that house communities and industry. It is one of the oldest engineering disciplines and one of the most directly consequential, since the structures civil engineers design and build are used by the public every day for decades or generations. The field now faces its greatest challenge in helping society adapt to climate change and build sustainably in an increasingly urbanised world. At Queen's University Belfast, this four-year full-time Undergraduate Masters programme concerns the planning, design, sustainability, and management of society's infrastructure. Taught by staff engaged in high-quality, industry-linked research and rooted in environmental impact considerations, the programme covers structures, foundations, water engineering, and project management. You will tackle some of the biggest challenges of the modern world: achieving sustainable living in an increasingly urbanised society, managing water and energy resources under pressure, and designing infrastructure that is resilient to climate impacts. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study civil engineering in a different national context and to develop the international perspective that global infrastructure projects require. A typical entry tariff of 152 points applies. You will develop skills in structural analysis, geotechnics, hydraulics, project management, and sustainable design, alongside the professional and ethical awareness that a discipline with such direct public impact demands. The MEng qualification supports the pathway to Chartered Engineer status through the Institution of Civil Engineers. Graduates go on to careers in structural engineering, transport, water and environmental engineering, construction management, consultancy, and government infrastructure agencies. Many work towards chartered status and take on leadership and specialist roles across major infrastructure projects.
