About this course

Civil engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical infrastructure that supports modern life, including roads, bridges, tunnels, dams, buildings, water systems, and coastal defences. Civil engineers work at the largest scale of human engineering activity, and the quality and sustainability of the infrastructure they create directly shapes the quality of life of everyone who uses it. The profession is currently facing some of its most significant challenges, as climate change, urbanisation, population growth, and the need for decarbonisation demand infrastructure that is not just functional and durable but genuinely sustainable. At the University of Warwick, this three-year full-time programme allows you to develop expertise in fundamental civil engineering principles in order to enhance the quality of life for present and future generations. You will study structural mechanics, geotechnics, hydraulics, transport engineering, construction materials, and the management and economics of civil engineering projects, developing both the analytical rigour to understand complex engineering systems and the practical skills to design and evaluate them. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement, giving you direct professional experience and an international perspective that prepares you for a global profession. Graduates from civil engineering programmes at Warwick are well placed for careers in consulting civil engineering firms, construction companies, infrastructure development organisations, local and national government, and the water, energy, and transport sectors. Many pursue chartered engineer status through the ICE or other professional institutions. Further study at master's level in structural engineering, geotechnics, or infrastructure management is available for those who wish to specialise.
