BEng Civil Engineering
About this course
Civil engineering shapes the built environment that defines modern life. Roads and railways, bridges and tunnels, hospitals and schools, water treatment plants and flood defences, all of these are the work of civil engineers, who are responsible for the design, construction, and management of the infrastructure on which society depends. The discipline combines the physical sciences, particularly mechanics and materials, with analytical methods, environmental awareness, and project management skills, and it carries a direct responsibility for public safety and quality of life. At Leeds, civil engineering is the discipline concerned with shaping the built environment around us every day, and the programme prepares graduates to design and manage the projects that improve the world we live in and protect the natural environment. You will study structural mechanics, fluid mechanics, geotechnics, environmental engineering, and construction management, developing both the technical knowledge and the professional skills needed to contribute to major projects. The programme includes a sandwich placement year and embedded work placement opportunities, giving you substantial professional experience within the degree. It runs over three years full-time, with a typical entry tariff of 152 points. Graduates of civil engineering programmes work in construction, infrastructure, consultancy, and the public sector, designing and managing roads, bridges, buildings, water systems, and a wide range of other infrastructure projects. The discipline offers a clear professional development pathway, with many graduates working towards Chartered Civil Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers. Postgraduate study in specialised areas such as structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, or environmental engineering is also a common route.
