BEng Civil and Structural Engineering
About this course
Civil and structural engineering is the discipline responsible for the design, construction and maintenance of the built and natural environments that support human society. Roads, bridges, dams, tunnels, buildings, water treatment plants and flood defences are all products of civil engineering, as are the urban infrastructure systems that modern cities depend on. Structural engineering, as a specialism within civil engineering, is concerned specifically with how structures carry loads safely and efficiently, and with ensuring that the built environment withstands the forces placed upon it. At the University of Dundee, this four-year programme gives you a thorough grounding in the principles and practice of civil and structural engineering. You will develop expertise in structural analysis, materials science, geotechnics, hydraulics, transportation and construction management, learning to apply engineering theory to the challenges of designing and building structures that are safe, durable and sustainable. A year abroad is included in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study engineering at an international partner institution and gain a broader perspective on global infrastructure challenges and approaches. Civil and structural engineers are in demand worldwide, working on projects that range from urban regeneration and transport infrastructure to renewable energy installations and climate adaptation schemes. Graduates typically pursue careers with consulting engineers, contractors, local authorities, government agencies and infrastructure clients. Many go on to postgraduate study in specialist areas such as structural design, geotechnical engineering, water engineering or project management, or pursue professional registration with a relevant engineering institution. The combination of technical depth and practical problem-solving that civil engineering develops makes graduates well prepared for careers that have genuine and lasting impact on communities and environments.
