About this course

Civil and environmental engineering addresses two of the most fundamental challenges of the built world: how to design and build structures, infrastructure and systems that are safe, durable and fit for purpose, and how to manage and protect the natural environment in the face of human activity and a changing climate. Civil engineering encompasses roads, bridges, buildings, tunnels, dams and water systems. Environmental engineering addresses water and air quality, waste treatment, contaminated land, flood management and the environmental performance of built systems. Studying them together reflects the reality that modern infrastructure must be designed with environmental consequences in mind from the outset. This four-year full-time degree at Coventry University includes a sandwich year with a work placement and a year abroad, giving you substantial professional and international experience built into the programme. The programme also includes a foundation year that builds the mathematical and scientific grounding needed for degree-level engineering, making it well suited to students who want a structured and supported entry to the discipline. Throughout the course you will study structural analysis, materials, geotechnics, hydraulics, environmental science, sustainability and engineering design, developing both theoretical understanding and practical skills in analysis, modelling and project work. Graduates work in civil engineering consultancies, construction companies, water and environmental agencies, local authorities, infrastructure clients and the energy sector. Roles in structural engineering, highway design, water engineering, environmental assessment, project management and sustainability consultancy are all relevant destinations. The combined civil and environmental focus is increasingly valued as the profession grapples with climate resilience, sustainability and the environmental performance of new and existing infrastructure. Further study and professional chartership with the Institution of Civil Engineers are natural next steps.
