MSci Chemistry with Research Abroad
About this course
Chemistry at Imperial College is one of the most rigorous and internationally recognised undergraduate chemistry programmes in the UK, combining depth in core and applied chemistry with professional-level experience through what Imperial describes as the only chemistry degree in the country offering both an academic and an industrial placement. This version of the degree, Chemistry with Research Abroad, extends the programme to four years and adds an international dimension through a period of research at a partner institution overseas, giving you a distinctive scientific and professional profile at graduation. You will study the full breadth of modern chemistry, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, alongside analytical methods, computational approaches, and the application of chemical knowledge to real-world challenges in medicine, materials, energy, and the environment. The programme leads to integrated master's level on completion, reflecting the depth and rigour of the curriculum. The research abroad component places you in an international scientific environment, developing your independence as a researcher and your ability to work across cultural and scientific contexts. The industrial placement complements this with direct professional experience in a chemistry-based industry. Chemistry graduates from Imperial go on to research careers in academia and industry, particularly in pharmaceuticals, materials science, chemical engineering, energy, and environmental chemistry. Professional roles in patent law, science communication, finance, and the civil service are also common, and Imperial's reputation opens doors in the most competitive global scientific and professional environments. The integrated master's qualification and the combination of research abroad and industrial experience makes this programme particularly strong preparation for doctoral research or for senior scientific roles in industry.
