MChem Chemistry with Industrial Placement
About this course
Chemistry is rightly called the central science, concerned with the composition and behaviour of matter at the atomic and molecular level and with the reactions that transform one substance into another. It underpins our understanding of life, drives the development of medicines and materials, and provides the intellectual tools to address some of the most pressing challenges of our time, from developing renewable energy technologies to creating sustainable materials and eliminating hunger and disease. No other discipline touches so many dimensions of human need. At the University of Warwick this four-year full-time programme includes an industrial placement year, giving you direct professional experience in a commercial chemistry, pharmaceutical or materials context. You will develop practical, analytical, numerical and logical reasoning skills across the full breadth of the discipline, from organic and inorganic synthesis through physical chemistry and chemical theory to specialised advanced areas in the later years of the programme. The industrial placement substantially strengthens your professional credentials and provides the kind of real-world context that classroom study alone cannot offer. Chemistry graduates are in demand across the pharmaceutical, chemical and materials industries, in research and development, manufacturing, quality assurance and regulatory roles. The industrial placement year makes Warwick graduates particularly attractive to employers and often opens direct employment routes. Academic chemistry, including PhD research, is a well-established career path for those who want to work at the scientific frontier. Finance, data science, science communication and patent law are among the many other careers where the analytical capabilities chemistry develops are consistently valued.
