MChem Chemistry with Biological and Medicinal Chemistry
About this course
Chemistry with Biological and Medicinal Chemistry is a degree that sits at one of the most productive frontiers in modern science: the intersection between chemistry, biology, and the design of new medicines. Chemistry provides the fundamental principles governing how matter behaves and how molecules are made and transformed. Biological chemistry extends those principles to the molecules of life, exploring how proteins, nucleic acids, and metabolites function in living systems. Medicinal chemistry applies all of this knowledge to the challenge of designing molecules that can interact selectively with biological targets to treat disease. At the University of Sheffield, this four-year, full-time MChem programme is designed to develop advanced research skills and to prepare graduates for the growing demands of the healthcare and pharmaceutical sectors. You will study the full breadth of chemistry, including organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry, alongside specialist topics in biological chemistry and medicinal chemistry, and you will have the opportunity to work in one of Sheffield's leading research groups, developing the research experience and expertise that postgraduate training and industrial research positions require. A sandwich year is built into the programme, giving you professional experience in a pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or chemical research environment. A year abroad option is also available, and work placements are integrated throughout. Graduates of MChem programmes in chemistry with a medicinal focus are well-qualified for careers in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, in drug discovery and development, medicinal chemistry, analytical chemistry, formulation, and regulatory science. Many also proceed to doctoral research in chemistry, biochemistry, or pharmacology, contributing to the development of new treatments. The combination of rigorous chemical training and specialist biological and medicinal knowledge makes graduates highly competitive in one of the most active and well-resourced areas of scientific research.
