BSc Chemistry, Biological and Medicinal Chemistry
About this course
Chemistry with a focus on biological and medicinal applications addresses some of the most exciting and consequential areas of contemporary science, examining how chemical understanding is translated into the treatments and technologies that shape medicine and biotechnology. Biological chemistry investigates how molecules function in living systems, from enzyme catalysis and metabolic pathways to DNA replication and protein folding. Medicinal chemistry takes these insights and applies them to the rational design and synthesis of drug molecules, understanding how small changes in chemical structure can transform the efficacy, selectivity, and safety of potential therapeutics. At the University of York this three-year full-time programme develops you as an adaptable chemist through research-led practical and classroom sessions. You will build a solid foundation in organic, inorganic, and physical chemistry before developing specialist knowledge in biological and medicinal chemistry. Laboratory work is central throughout, developing the practical skills and analytical thinking that characterise productive chemical scientists. The programme includes a sandwich year and work placement opportunities, ensuring that you graduate with professional experience in chemistry or a related industry that significantly strengthens your career readiness. Graduates from chemistry programmes with this biological and medicinal focus are in demand in the pharmaceutical industry, the biotechnology sector, academic and industrial research, clinical research organisations, regulatory agencies, and chemical analysis services. Roles in drug discovery, synthetic chemistry, analytical chemistry, and process chemistry are all common starting points. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study at master's or doctoral level, either in chemistry or in related fields such as pharmacology or biochemistry. The combination of adaptable chemical training and applied biological knowledge positions graduates well in sectors where innovation and scientific rigour are both at a premium.
