MA Central & East European Studies/Digital Media & Information Studies
About this course
Central and East European studies combined with digital media and information studies brings together two fields that are each concerned with how culture, knowledge and identity are produced, transmitted and transformed. Central and East European studies examines the languages, literatures, histories and cultures of a region that has been at the centre of some of the twentieth century's most significant political transformations, from the rise and fall of communism to post-Soviet transitions, European integration and ongoing debates about national and cultural identity. Digital media and information studies explores the creation, use and impact of digital content and information in the arts, humanities and society at large, bringing a human perspective to the issues of the digital age. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time programme draws on strong disciplinary resources in both areas, giving you the flexibility to study alongside other commitments while engaging seriously with languages, texts and the theoretical frameworks that make sense of digital culture. You will develop language skills in a Central or East European language alongside cultural and historical knowledge of the region, while also building an understanding of how digital technologies are reshaping communication, access to information and cultural participation globally. A year abroad gives you the opportunity to study in the region or at an institution with complementary expertise. Graduates from programmes combining area studies with digital humanities and media studies pursue careers in international organisations, translation and interpreting, cultural diplomacy, broadcasting, publishing, digital content management, archive and library work, journalism and the civil service. The combination of regional expertise, language capability and digital literacy is particularly valuable in an international environment where the ability to move between cultural contexts and digital platforms is increasingly essential. Postgraduate study in European studies, digital humanities, information science or media studies offers further pathways for those who wish to specialise or pursue research.
