MA Central & East European Studies/Classics
About this course
Central and East European Studies combined with Classics is a degree that places two very different but richly rewarding intellectual traditions in productive dialogue. Central and East European Studies is a multidisciplinary field concerned with one of the most historically turbulent regions of the world, the countries stretching from the Baltic to the Balkans that have experienced war, revolution, the rise and fall of communism, and the profound ongoing changes of post-communist transformation. Classics is the study of the ancient Greek and Roman worlds, engaging with their literature, history, philosophy, art, and the civilisations whose legacy continues to shape European culture. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year full-time programme combines both fields within a curriculum that draws on history, political science, sociology, and literary study. You will engage with the dramatic and often tragic history of twentieth- and twenty-first-century Central and Eastern Europe, including the Russo-Ukrainian war and the rise of populism, while also developing your understanding of the classical world from which much of European civilisation derives. The degree includes a year abroad, broadening your engagement with the regions and cultures you are studying. The typical entry tariff of 152 points reflects the standard expected. You will develop research skills, the ability to analyse complex historical and political material, and the capacity to engage with texts and ideas from very different periods and cultural traditions. These are capabilities with wide professional value. Graduates pursue careers in government, diplomacy, international organisations, journalism, policy research, academic research, translation, and the cultural sector. The combination of classical and modern European knowledge is unusual and distinctive in a competitive graduate market. Postgraduate study in European studies, classical studies, international relations, or a specific regional field is a well-established route.
