MA Celtic Studies/Mathematics
About this course
Celtic studies is the scholarly examination of the languages, literatures, histories, and cultures of the Celtic peoples, encompassing Welsh, Irish, Gaelic, Breton, Cornish, and Manx traditions alongside the medieval world from which modern Celtic cultures emerged. It is a discipline that requires both linguistic rigour and the ability to interpret texts and artefacts across vast spans of time, from early medieval manuscripts to contemporary spoken language communities. Mathematics, by contrast, is among the most universal and abstract of disciplines, training the mind in logical reasoning, proof, and quantitative analysis. At the University of Glasgow, this part-time joint degree allows you to pursue both subjects with serious academic depth. In Celtic studies, you will have the opportunity to combine language study with courses on medieval and modern Celtic cultures of the British Isles, developing reading skills in one or more Celtic languages alongside broader cultural and historical understanding. In mathematics, you will build your abilities in pure and applied areas, developing the rigorous proof-based thinking that distinguishes mathematical training from other quantitative approaches. The degree includes a year abroad, offering the chance to engage with a partner institution's provision and, in the Celtic studies strand, potentially to spend time in a Celtic language community. Studying part-time allows you to progress at a sustainable pace that fits around other commitments. The combination of Celtic studies and mathematics produces a graduate with an unusual and distinctive profile. The rigour of mathematical training pairs well with careers in data, computing, finance, and research, while the linguistic and cultural depth of Celtic studies opens pathways in heritage, broadcasting, policy, education, and language preservation work. Teaching, translation, archival research, and academic careers in Celtic or medieval studies are also natural outcomes, as is postgraduate work in either discipline.
