BSc Business Psychology with Placement
About this course
Business psychology sits at the intersection of how organisations function and how individuals within them think, decide, and perform. It draws on occupational and social psychology to explore questions about motivation, leadership, team dynamics, career development, decision-making under uncertainty, and the ways in which individual differences shape workplace behaviour. As organisations face growing pressure to understand and engage their people more effectively, the discipline has moved from a specialist interest to a mainstream concern for businesses of all kinds. This four-year full-time programme at Birkbeck College combines a grounding in introductory business with core areas of organisational psychology. You will study how people manage their careers, how teams form and break down, how organisations can be designed to bring out the best in their members, and how psychological research methods can be applied to workplace questions. A distinctive feature of the programme is its placement element: you will spend a sustained period working within a real organisation, gaining hands-on experience that allows you to test what you have learned in a live professional context before you complete your studies. Birkbeck's location in central London places you close to a wide range of potential placement employers across the public, private, and third sectors. Graduates in business psychology are well placed for careers in human resources, talent management, organisational development, management consultancy, recruitment, and training and development. The programme's combination of psychological insight and business understanding is increasingly valued in contexts where organisations are trying to build more effective, inclusive, and resilient workplaces. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in occupational psychology, human resource management, or organisational behaviour.
