BSc Business Management
About this course
Business management is the study of how organisations work, how they are led, how they compete and how they create value for their customers, employees and owners. It is one of the broadest and most practically relevant disciplines available at degree level, drawing on economics, psychology, sociology and quantitative methods to equip graduates with the understanding and skills needed to contribute effectively in organisations of all kinds. Whether the goal is a management career in a large company, a start-up, the public sector or a social enterprise, a business management degree provides the conceptual foundations and practical orientation that employers seek. At Birkbeck College this BSc Business Management is designed with employability and flexibility at its core, developing the knowledge, skills and professional attitudes that employers look for across a wide range of sectors. Birkbeck's distinctive character as an evening university means the programme is particularly well suited to students who may be working alongside their studies, and the London location provides access to one of the world's most diverse and dynamic employment markets. You will be introduced to the key functions of business, including marketing, finance, operations, strategy and organisational behaviour, giving you a broad understanding from which you can identify the areas you wish to specialise in as you progress through the degree. The programme runs full time over three years. You will develop skills in business analysis, strategic thinking, financial literacy, team working and professional communication. The ability to understand organisations from multiple perspectives and to apply analytical frameworks to business problems is a genuinely transferable competence. Graduates from business management programmes move into management trainee schemes, commercial roles, marketing, finance, operations and entrepreneurial ventures across a wide range of sectors. Postgraduate study in business administration or a specialist management discipline is also a well-established route.
