About this course

Business management and leadership is a discipline that takes seriously both the technical and human dimensions of running organisations effectively. Management provides the frameworks for understanding how organisations are structured, how they make decisions, how they deploy resources and how they compete and collaborate in different markets. Leadership focuses on the human side of these processes: how to motivate and develop people, how to communicate a compelling direction, how to build cultures that enable organisations to perform over time and how to navigate change and uncertainty. At the University of Leeds this part-time programme is taught on Thursday evenings over four years, with a structured mix of class-based lectures and seminars alongside digital and online resources. This format is designed for people who are already working and want to develop their management and leadership capabilities while continuing in their careers. You will bring your professional experience into the learning environment, and the programme is designed to allow you to connect academic theory and the latest research to the real world of work, making you a more effective manager and leader as you study. The combination of academic rigour and practical relevance is central to the programme's design. You will engage with established management theory and contemporary research while applying that knowledge to the contexts you encounter in your professional life, developing both intellectual depth and practical judgement. Graduates move into more senior management and leadership roles within their existing organisations or make transitions into new sectors where their combination of professional experience and academic qualification is valued.
