BA Business Management and Economics
About this course
Business management and economics is a combination that develops two complementary sets of analytical tools for understanding organisations and the environments in which they operate. Business management gives you practical knowledge of how firms are organised, financed, marketed, and led, developing your understanding of the decisions managers face and the frameworks that help them think about those decisions. Economics provides the theoretical and empirical foundations for understanding how markets work, how governments intervene, and what drives the macro-level conditions, interest rates, inflation, trade, and growth, that shape the business environment. Together, they give you a perspective on commercial life that is both analytical and practically grounded. At the University of Sheffield, this three-year full-time programme combines a comprehensive understanding of core business issues and the principles of how businesses operate and succeed with economic analysis and economic policy. The programme includes a sandwich year, a year abroad, and work placement opportunities, meaning you will gain substantial professional experience and an international perspective before you graduate. You will develop skills in strategic analysis, financial management, organisational behaviour, marketing, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and quantitative methods, building a versatile toolkit that is applicable across the private, public, and third sectors. Business management and economics graduates are in high demand across a wide range of industries. The combination of business acumen and economic analytical ability is particularly valued in management consultancy, financial services, the corporate sector, the civil service, and international organisations. Typical graduate roles include business analyst, management consultant, financial analyst, strategy manager, and policy analyst. The quantitative and analytical skills developed by the economics component are increasingly sought by technology companies and data-driven businesses alongside the management knowledge. Postgraduate study in business, economics, management, or finance is a natural next step for those who wish to specialise or advance to more senior roles.
