BA Business Enterprise and Economics
About this course
Business enterprise and economics is a combination that places entrepreneurship, innovation, and the creation of new ventures alongside the analytical foundations that make economic understanding rigorous. Enterprise is about the capacity to challenge established ways of doing things and to create value through new ideas, new organisations, and new approaches to existing problems. Economics provides the framework for understanding the markets and institutions within which entrepreneurial activity occurs, and the quantitative and analytical tools that rigorous thinking about business opportunity demands. At Strathclyde you will study the theory and practice of business enterprise, exploring how new ventures are created, how entrepreneurs identify and exploit opportunities, how innovation disrupts established markets, and how businesses grow and build sustainable competitive advantage. This is set against a thorough grounding in economic theory, including microeconomics, macroeconomics, and the applied economics of markets and firms. The four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, giving you an international perspective on entrepreneurship and economic development that is particularly valuable for a degree focused on creating and growing businesses in a global context. Graduates go on to found their own businesses, to work in venture capital and private equity, to take roles in innovation and strategy within established organisations, to work in economic consultancy, and to pursue careers in finance, business development, and policy. The combination of entrepreneurial drive and economic analytical skill is distinctive and sought after by employers who need people who can both understand markets rigorously and create new value within them. Postgraduate study in entrepreneurship, business, or economics is also a natural route.
