MA(SocSci) Business Economics/Politics
About this course
Business economics and politics is a combination that addresses how markets and governments interact, and how the decisions made in both shape the world in which organisations operate. Business economics applies economic reasoning to the decisions facing firms, examining resource allocation, pricing, market structure, and the competitive environment in which businesses must make strategic choices. Politics examines how power is organised and exercised, how policy is made, and how political systems and ideological conflicts shape the rules within which economic activity takes place. Together, they develop a graduate who can analyse both the commercial and the political dimensions of the environments they work in. At the University of Glasgow, this four-year, full-time degree includes a year abroad, adding an international academic dimension to a programme whose subject matter is inherently global. You will develop the analytical tools needed to understand how economic forces drive business decisions and how political forces shape economic policy, studying real-world case studies alongside the latest research to build both theoretical rigour and practical understanding. The year abroad extends this, giving you exposure to different economic and political environments and the personal adaptability that employers in internationally oriented roles value. The typical entry tariff is 200 UCAS points, reflecting the academic demands of a programme at a leading research university. Graduates from business economics and politics programmes are well placed for careers in economic consultancy, financial services, the civil service, policy research, think tanks, international organisations, political organisations, journalism, and commercially focused roles in any sector where understanding the interplay of markets and government matters. Postgraduate study in economics, politics, public policy, or international relations provides a natural route for those who wish to specialise or pursue research.
