BSc Business
About this course
Business touches almost every dimension of how organisations and economies function. A degree in business management gives you a systematic understanding of how firms are structured and led, how they create and deliver value, how they manage people and resources, and how they operate within markets and regulatory environments. Far from being a purely practical training, it is also an intellectual discipline that draws on economics, sociology, psychology, mathematics, and law to explain why organisations succeed or fail. At Birkbeck you will be introduced to the key functions of business, including strategy, marketing, finance, human resource management, operations, and entrepreneurship, and you will develop the analytical and practical skills that employers seek. The three-year full-time programme is designed so that you can identify the areas that interest you most and focus on them as your studies progress, building a coherent specialism alongside a broad management foundation. Employability is a thread throughout the curriculum, with teaching connected to current business practice and assessment designed to develop the skills that graduate employers value. Birkbeck's location in London gives you access to one of the world's leading business cities, with connections to industries ranging from finance and professional services to the creative industries and the public sector. Graduates go on to roles in management, consultancy, marketing, finance, human resources, operations, and entrepreneurship across both the private and public sectors. Business management also provides a strong foundation for postgraduate study, whether in a specialist MBA, a master's in a functional area such as finance or marketing, or further academic research. The flexibility and transferability of the degree mean it opens a wide range of routes.
