BSc Business and Management
About this course
Business and management are concerned with how organisations are created, led, and sustained, and with the decisions that determine whether they succeed or fail. The discipline draws on economics, psychology, sociology, and quantitative methods to examine how firms and institutions allocate resources, motivate people, respond to competitive pressure, and navigate environments shaped by technology, regulation, and changing consumer expectations. At degree level, business and management education develops not just knowledge of these areas but the capacity to think critically and creatively about them. At Bristol this three-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, providing a supported entry route for students who benefit from additional preparation before the main degree. Across the programme you will gain a grounded understanding of how organisations and managers operate in a global environment, examining real industry case studies that bring theory into contact with practice. You will study core business functions such as strategy, marketing, finance, and operations alongside the broader organisational and managerial contexts in which decisions are made. The programme develops analytical and problem-solving skills, as well as the interpersonal and communication abilities that employers in every sector seek. Bristol's location in one of the UK's major commercial and cultural cities means opportunities to engage with real organisations and the professional networks associated with them. Business and management graduates are among the most employable in the UK, finding roles across virtually every sector. Graduate positions in management consulting, financial services, marketing, operations, human resources, retail, technology, and public administration are all accessible from this foundation. Many graduates choose to specialise further through professional qualifications or postgraduate study, including MBAs, master's degrees in finance, marketing, or human resource management, and sector-specific programmes. The broad analytical and communication skills the degree develops also serve well in sectors where business expertise meets social purpose, including the charity sector, public policy, and social enterprise.
