BA Bulgarian and Polish
About this course
Bulgarian and Polish together open up the cultures and histories of two of the most significant Slavic-speaking nations in Europe. Polish is spoken by over 40 million people and carries a literary and historical heritage of great depth, shaped by a position at the crossroads of European civilisation and by the turbulent twentieth-century history of partition, occupation, and communist rule. Bulgarian, the oldest written Slavic language, traces its literary tradition back to the ninth century and the creation of the Cyrillic alphabet, and its speakers share a rich culture connected to the Balkans, Byzantium, and the Ottoman legacy. University College London's four-year full-time degree in Bulgarian and Polish is taught within a department with deep expertise in Slavonic and East European languages, and both languages can be studied from beginner level or built on from existing knowledge. You will develop high-level communicative competence in both languages alongside literary and cultural study, engaging with texts, film, and contemporary society in both the Polish and Bulgarian traditions. UCL's location in London connects you with substantial Polish and Bulgarian diaspora communities as well as the diplomatic, academic, and cultural networks that make the city one of the world's great centres for Slavonic studies. The programme develops your ability to read, analyse, and communicate about literary and cultural works in both languages with scholarly precision. Graduates in Bulgarian and Polish go on to work in diplomacy, the civil service, intelligence, journalism, translation, international business, academia, and international organisations. The rarity of this combination makes graduates distinctively valuable to organisations with interests in Central and South-Eastern Europe. Many continue to postgraduate study in Slavonic studies, comparative literature, or area studies, and the analytical skills developed by intensive language study at this level are valued across a wide range of professional contexts.
