BA Broadcast and Multimedia Journalism with a Placement Year
About this course
Broadcast and multimedia journalism is a discipline concerned with finding, verifying and communicating news across television, radio, online video and digital platforms. It combines the core journalistic skills of reporting, writing, interviewing and editorial judgment with the technical and production skills specific to broadcast media: camera operation, editing, sound recording, live reporting and the management of news across multiple platforms simultaneously. In a media environment where the line between broadcast, digital and social media is increasingly blurred, journalists who can work fluently across formats are in consistent demand. At the University of East Anglia, this four-year full-time degree includes a placement year, giving you extended professional experience within a working newsroom or broadcast organisation before you complete your studies. You will develop the full range of journalistic skills, from finding and verifying stories through to packaging them for different broadcast and digital formats, learning how to navigate the legal and ethical frameworks that govern responsible journalism. The programme takes the verification and accuracy of reporting seriously, recognising that the value of journalism lies in its commitment to finding out what is actually happening and communicating it faithfully. Typical entry is around 120 UCAS tariff points. Graduates work across broadcast television and radio, digital news organisations, podcasting, social media news production, documentary making, corporate communications and public affairs. The placement year significantly strengthens your employability by giving you real professional credits and industry connections before you graduate. Many graduates move directly into jobs in the newsrooms where they completed their placements. Further study in journalism, media law or documentary production is available for those who want to develop specialist expertise or pursue careers in investigative reporting or broadcast documentary.
