BSc Biomedicine
About this course
Biomedicine is the branch of science concerned with the biological and biochemical foundations of health, disease and medical treatment. It bridges the gap between pure biological science and clinical medicine, examining the mechanisms through which diseases develop at the cellular and molecular level, how the body responds to pathogens and injury, and how drugs and therapies interact with physiological systems. A biomedical science degree equips you with the scientific knowledge that underpins modern medicine and the laboratory and analytical skills that health, research and pharmaceutical employers value. At the University of Huddersfield the programme includes a foundation year, providing a secure scientific grounding before the degree proper begins, which is particularly valuable if your prior study has gaps in biology or chemistry. Across the full programme you will study areas such as biochemistry, genetics, microbiology, immunology, pharmacology and pathology, developing both theoretical understanding and hands-on laboratory technique. A sandwich year in industry is included, giving you a full year of professional experience in a research, diagnostic or pharmaceutical setting before you return to complete your degree. Work placement is also embedded in the course, ensuring you develop the professional skills and real-world context that make graduates immediately effective in employment. Biomedical science graduates are in consistent demand across the NHS, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, clinical research organisations and academic research. Many graduates enter clinical laboratory roles as biomedical scientists, working in hospital departments including haematology, biochemistry, microbiology and histopathology. Others pursue careers in drug development, medical devices, public health, forensic science or science communication. The foundation-to-degree pathway and the substantial placement experience built into this programme make it a practical and well-supported route into a field where scientific rigour and professional confidence are both essential.
