BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science sits at the heart of modern medicine, providing the laboratory expertise and scientific understanding that enable diseases to be diagnosed, monitored, and treated. The biomedical scientist working in a clinical laboratory is the professional whose analysis of blood, tissue, and other samples gives clinicians the information they need to make decisions about patient care. The discipline combines biology and chemistry with the technical skills of laboratory science, and it is both scientifically rigorous and directly connected to the welfare of real patients. At the University of Salford this three-year, full-time programme develops your understanding of healthcare and human disease processes alongside the practical laboratory skills needed to work professionally in the field. You will study the key areas of biomedical science, including haematology, clinical biochemistry, microbiology, and immunology, developing both the theoretical knowledge and the hands-on competence that clinical laboratory practice requires. A sandwich year is built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are available, giving you a sustained period of professional experience in an NHS laboratory or other relevant setting before you graduate. This practical dimension is central to producing graduates who are genuinely ready to contribute from the outset of their careers. Graduates of biomedical science go on to work in NHS clinical laboratories, private healthcare, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, blood services, and medical research institutions. Many enter specialist diagnostic roles in areas such as haematology, biochemistry, immunology, or microbiology, and some progress to reporting and supervisory responsibilities within clinical departments. Others move into research, quality assurance, regulatory affairs, or medical affairs roles in the life sciences industry. A significant number continue to postgraduate study, whether in a specific biomedical discipline, in medicine, or in a related clinical science.
