BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science is the scientific foundation of modern healthcare, examining how the human body functions in health and how those functions are disrupted in disease. It brings together biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, microbiology, haematology, pharmacology, immunology and pathology to provide the laboratory-based knowledge and technical competence that underpins clinical diagnosis, treatment monitoring and medical research. Biomedical scientists are the people who analyse blood samples, culture micro-organisms, examine tissue sections and run the laboratory tests that clinicians depend on to diagnose and manage disease. At the University of Bedfordshire, this three-year full-time programme develops your understanding across the breadth of the biomedical sciences, from the molecular mechanisms of cellular function through to the laboratory investigation of major disease categories including cardiovascular disease, cancer, diabetes and infectious illness. You will develop practical laboratory skills alongside theoretical knowledge, learning to work with the equipment, techniques and quality systems that professional biomedical laboratory practice requires. Bedfordshire's professionally oriented approach and strong student satisfaction in teaching and learning, knowledge development and future skills preparation ensure your degree is grounded in what the sector actually needs. Graduates of biomedical science programmes are eligible to apply for registration with the Health and Care Professions Council as biomedical scientists and to work in NHS clinical laboratories and private diagnostic services. Other career paths include roles in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical research organisations, forensic science services, public health laboratories, medical device firms and science communication. Further study at master's or doctoral level in biomedical science, molecular biology, clinical laboratory science or a related field is the route for those drawn to research or specialist clinical careers.
