BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical Science is the discipline that forms the scientific backbone of modern medicine, encompassing the laboratory investigation of human disease and the biological processes that underlie health and illness. Biomedical scientists work in clinical laboratories analysing patient samples to support the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of disease, and they work in research environments developing new understanding of the mechanisms of conditions from cancer and infection to cardiovascular disease and genetic disorders. It is a discipline that demands both rigorous scientific training and a clear focus on the patient whose samples and health the work ultimately serves. At Middlesex University in London, this part-time programme is available with a foundation year for students who need additional scientific preparation before engaging with the full degree curriculum. You will study the key areas of biomedical science, including clinical biochemistry, microbiology, haematology, immunology, cellular pathology and transfusion science, developing the theoretical understanding and practical laboratory skills that the discipline requires. The programme is professionally accredited, and a sandwich year and work placement are built in, giving you substantial laboratory experience in a professional clinical or research setting alongside your academic work. Professional accreditation supports the path to registration as a Biomedical Scientist with the Health and Care Professions Council. Qualified Biomedical Scientists work in NHS hospital laboratories, private healthcare, blood transfusion services, research institutions, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, and in regulatory and quality roles. Many develop specialist skills in particular areas of laboratory medicine as their careers progress. Others move into laboratory management, clinical research, or education and training roles. The HCPC registration route and the professional recognition that comes with it provide a clear and well-structured career pathway.
