BSc Biomedical Science
About this course
Biomedical science investigates the biological processes that underlie human health and disease, combining knowledge of chemistry, biology, and physiology with the practical laboratory skills needed to support clinical diagnosis and medical research. It is a discipline with a direct connection to patient care, producing the scientists who analyse blood, tissue, and other samples in clinical laboratories, and who carry out the research that advances our understanding of disease and treatment. At Coventry University this three-year, full-time degree is designed to give you valuable hands-on experience in biomedical science, supporting your development for roles in healthcare, research, and industry. You will study the biological systems that underpin human health, from cell biology and microbiology to haematology, immunology, and clinical biochemistry, developing both theoretical understanding and the practical laboratory skills that professional practice requires. A sandwich year and a year abroad are built into the programme, and work placement opportunities are also available, giving you substantial professional experience in clinical or industrial settings and the chance to broaden your perspective through study or work overseas. Graduates of biomedical science go on to careers in NHS clinical laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, biotechnology firms, research institutes, and public health agencies. Many enter specialist diagnostic roles in areas such as haematology, microbiology, histopathology, or virology, and some progress to reporting and supervisory roles within clinical laboratory settings. Others move into research and development, quality assurance, medical affairs, or science education. A significant proportion of graduates use the degree as the foundation for postgraduate study, whether in biomedical research, medicine, pharmacy, or a specialist clinical science. The sandwich placement and year abroad are significant advantages in a competitive graduate job market.
