BEng Biomedical Engineering
About this course
Biomedical engineering applies engineering principles and methods to the design and development of devices, systems, and technologies for use in medicine and healthcare. It encompasses medical devices from pacemakers and prosthetic limbs to imaging systems and surgical robots, as well as the biomechanics of the human body, tissue engineering, and the computational modelling of physiological systems. The discipline sits at the intersection of engineering, medicine, and biology, and it has been responsible for some of the most significant improvements in patient care of the past half-century. At the University of Surrey, this BEng Biomedical Engineering is taught by leading academics drawing on more than fifty years of experience training biomedical engineers. You will study the engineering fundamentals, including mechanics, electronics, signals and systems, and materials, alongside the biological and medical sciences needed to apply them in healthcare contexts. You will engage with medical device design, physiological measurement, biomaterials, and the regulatory and ethical frameworks that govern the development and deployment of medical technologies. The programme runs over three years full-time. Graduates of biomedical engineering programmes work in medical device companies, NHS clinical engineering departments, diagnostic imaging, pharmaceutical companies, and academic research. The engineering training the degree provides is also valued in roles beyond healthcare, including in technology development and consultancy. Many graduates go on to postgraduate study in biomedical engineering, or to clinical training in areas such as clinical engineering, where the combination of engineering rigour and medical understanding is directly applicable to improving patient care.
