About this course
Biology is the science of life in all its forms, addressing how organisms are built, how they function, how they reproduce and develop, how they interact with each other and their environments, and how they have evolved into the extraordinary diversity of life on Earth. It encompasses scales from the molecular mechanisms inside cells to the dynamics of entire ecosystems, and it is a discipline that simultaneously provides fundamental scientific knowledge and addresses some of the most urgent practical challenges facing humanity, from disease and food security to conservation and climate change. At the University of Southampton, this four-year full-time integrated master's course is flexible and wide-ranging, examining life at all levels, from molecules and cells, to whole organisms, species, communities, and entire ecosystems. A sandwich year, year abroad, and work placements are all available, giving you significant professional and international experience during your studies. The programme develops your research skills in depth, and you will work closely with Southampton's researchers as they address major global issues in biology, gaining experience of what it means to contribute to scientific knowledge at the frontier of the discipline. The integrated master's structure means you develop to postgraduate level within the programme, gaining a depth of expertise that prepares you for research or specialist professional roles. Graduates go on to careers in research, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, conservation, environmental management, public health, science communication, and education. The depth of scientific training the programme provides is highly valued across the life sciences sector, and many graduates pursue postgraduate research or enter PhD programmes to develop specialist expertise. Others move into careers in healthcare, environmental consultancy, data science, or science policy, where the combination of biological knowledge and research skills opens a wide range of professional doors.
