About this course

Biology and philosophy may seem like an unusual combination, but they address some of the deepest questions available to us, often from surprisingly compatible angles. Biology is the study of life at every scale, from the molecular machinery of individual cells to the behaviour of entire ecosystems, tackling questions about how living things work, evolve, and interact. Philosophy asks what it means for something to be alive, what kind of reasoning can count as scientific, and what our moral obligations to other species and ecosystems might be. Together, they produce a distinctive kind of critical and empirical thinker. At St Andrews, a research university with particular strength in the biological sciences and in philosophy, this four-year full-time degree allows you to develop genuine expertise in both disciplines simultaneously. In biology you will study cellular and molecular processes, genetics, ecology, evolution, and animal and plant biology, engaging with the full range of life at its different levels of organisation. In philosophy you will examine logic, epistemology, ethics, and the philosophy of science, developing the conceptual tools to question assumptions and construct rigorous arguments. A year abroad is embedded in the programme, giving you the opportunity to study in a different academic culture. The typical entry tariff of 184 points reflects the high expectations of the institution. Graduates from this combination pursue careers in scientific research, bioethics, science communication, environmental policy, conservation, medicine, law, education, and a wide range of roles that require both empirical knowledge and analytical rigour. The discipline crossing nature of the degree is increasingly valued by employers who recognise that the most important problems require more than one kind of thinking. Many graduates continue to postgraduate study in biology, philosophy, bioethics, or science and technology studies.
