BSc Biological Sciences (with Foundation Year)
About this course
Biological sciences is one of the broadest and most consequential areas of scientific study, encompassing the study of living organisms from the molecular level to the ecosystem, and from individual cells to entire biospheres. It draws on chemistry, physics, and mathematics to understand the mechanisms of life, and connects fundamental scientific discovery to the challenges of medicine, conservation, food security, and environmental management that define our era. Biologists work on some of the most pressing questions humanity faces, from the treatment of disease and the understanding of the genome to the conservation of biodiversity and the response to climate change. At Nottingham Trent University, this four-year full-time programme includes a foundation year, designed to support students who benefit from an additional year of preparation before beginning the degree proper. The foundation year develops core bioscience knowledge and study skills using an active and collaborative approach, building the scientific and academic foundation needed to engage successfully with the degree content that follows. You will then study biological sciences across the breadth of the discipline, from cell and molecular biology, genetics, evolution, and microbiology to ecology, conservation, and the applied dimensions of biotechnology and environmental science. NTU has strong connections to industry and research, and the programme benefits from this applied orientation. Graduates pursue careers across the biological sciences sector, including research, environmental consulting, conservation, biomedical science, pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, public health, food science, and education. The breadth of the programme means that graduates are genuinely versatile, capable of adapting to different roles as their careers develop. Many graduates also go on to postgraduate study in a specific area of biology or an applied life science field, and the foundation-year route means that the programme is accessible to students from a variety of prior educational backgrounds.
