About this course

Biochemistry and microbiology together address two of the most fundamental aspects of biological science. Biochemistry examines living systems at the molecular level, studying the structure and function of proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and carbohydrates and the metabolic pathways through which cells harness energy and carry out the chemistry of life. Microbiology focuses on the extraordinary diversity of microscopic life: bacteria, viruses, fungi and protists, their biology, their roles in ecosystems and human health, and the ways in which they can be understood, exploited and controlled. Together they provide a rigorous foundation for understanding the molecular and microbial dimensions of biology. At the University of Strathclyde, this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad, providing the opportunity to engage with biochemistry and microbiology research in a different institution and country. You will study the molecular basis of life, including gene expression and regulation, protein structure and function, enzyme kinetics and metabolic pathways, alongside microbial diversity, physiology, pathogenesis, immunology and the control of infection. These two strands reinforce one another throughout: understanding how pathogens cause disease requires both microbiological and biochemical knowledge. Laboratory work, data analysis and scientific communication are central to the programme, developing the practical skills that research and industrial roles require. The programme is research-informed throughout, connecting you to active areas of inquiry in biomolecular science. Graduates go on to careers in pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, clinical laboratories, research institutions, public health, environmental microbiology, food science, education and regulatory affairs. Many go on to postgraduate study, including doctoral research in biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology or related biomedical sciences. The combination of molecular and microbial expertise is valued across the life sciences industry.
