About this course

Biochemistry is the study of the molecular basis of life, asking how the chemical processes within and between cells sustain living organisms, how they respond to change, and how they break down in disease. It draws on chemistry, cell biology, genetics and molecular biology to investigate how proteins, nucleic acids and other macromolecules are built, how they function, and how the information encoded in genes is expressed, regulated and inherited. It is a discipline at the frontier of biological and medical science, with direct relevance to understanding and treating disease, developing new medicines and advancing biotechnology. This four-year full-time degree at the University of Glasgow includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to gain international research or academic experience. Glasgow's life sciences degrees are known for their flexibility, and throughout the programme you will apply the theory of the classroom in practical situations, working in laboratories and engaging with the full breadth of what biochemistry encompasses, from the molecular biology of infection and immunity to the biochemistry of complex organisms including humans, animals and plants. You will develop strong laboratory skills alongside the ability to design experiments, analyse data and communicate scientific findings effectively. Graduates work across the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, academic and clinical research, clinical biochemistry laboratories, public health, environmental science and science communication. Roles in drug discovery, research and development, quality assurance, regulatory affairs and clinical trials are all realistic destinations. Many graduates pursue postgraduate study, including PhD research programmes in biochemistry, molecular biology or the biomedical sciences, while others enter professional training routes in medicine, pharmacy or clinical science. The year abroad adds both breadth of experience and international perspective to an already strong qualification.
