MA Biblical Studies and German
About this course
Biblical studies is the scholarly examination of the Christian and Jewish scriptures and the wider body of texts that surrounded them in antiquity. It is a discipline that draws on history, linguistics, archaeology, literary criticism, and theology to understand the contexts in which these texts were produced, what their authors intended, and how they have been interpreted across the centuries. The Christian and Jewish scriptures have exercised a profound influence on Western civilisation, shaping art, literature, law, politics, and philosophy, and engaging seriously with them requires both linguistic precision and broad cultural knowledge. Combining biblical studies with German at St Andrews creates an unusual and rewarding degree. German opens access to a rich theological and philosophical tradition: much of the most important biblical scholarship of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries was written in German, and a significant part of modern Protestant and Catholic theology continues to be produced in German-speaking countries. The two subjects thus have a real intellectual relationship beyond their individual merits. At St Andrews this four-year full-time programme develops both strands properly. Your biblical studies will focus on the Old and New Testaments alongside a range of other Jewish and Christian writings from these periods, including texts such as the Dead Sea Scrolls, situating the scriptures in their historical and cultural contexts. Your German will be developed to a high level of proficiency. The programme includes a year abroad, giving you the opportunity to study at an international partner institution, potentially in a German-speaking country, adding depth to your linguistic and cultural immersion. Graduates move into careers in ministry, theology, education, academic research, chaplaincy, journalism, and the cultural sector. Many also continue to postgraduate study in biblical studies, theology, divinity, or German, building towards research or specialist professional careers.
