BMus Bachelor of Music
About this course
A Bachelor of Music degree offers the opportunity to develop your musicianship, creative practice, and scholarly understanding of music at the highest level, in an environment dedicated to the art. Music at degree level is not simply an extension of school performance or theory: it is an intellectually demanding engagement with music as a cultural, historical, and artistic phenomenon, alongside the development of performance, composition, and analytical skills that can take your practice to new levels of sophistication and ambition. At Aberdeen this four-year full-time programme includes a year abroad and is taught by world-renowned composers, conductors, musicologists, and researchers working across all genres, styles, and periods. You will have access to first-class facilities and instruments, and benefit from the vibrant musical scene of north-east Scotland, including opportunities to perform and engage with the professional musical life of the region. The programme provides opportunities to specialise in teaching music or working with music in community settings, reflecting Aberdeen's commitment to preparing graduates for the full range of musical careers rather than only performance. You will develop as both a musician and a thinker about music, building the technical skills, cultural knowledge, and critical understanding that serious musical study demands. Graduates in music find careers across performance, composition, music education, community music, arts administration, broadcasting, music journalism, music publishing, and the music industry. The year abroad broadens your musical horizons and professional networks. Many graduates pursue teaching careers in schools or higher education, work as performers or composers, or move into arts management and cultural programming. Others apply their analytical and communication skills to careers in journalism, media, or cultural policy. Some continue to postgraduate study in musicology, composition, performance, or music education.
